I'd always read that Unix was called that as a joke, poking fun at
Multics, one of the time-sharing OSes of choice at the time. Not sure if
it meant anything originally.

If you want to pick this do death, operating system should probably be
lower case; OS is capital, if it appears. Open source is, indeed, two
words, unless it's a host name, and shouldn't be capitalized unless it's
at the beginning of a sentence. The second word should not be
capitalized.

If the - was in there to make it a definition, the words "refers to"
should be omitted, e.g. "Darwin - Apple's open source operating system..."
Otherwise, the - should be omitted.

"Closest counterpart" is a lot less wordy than "most similar counterpart".
There's no such thing as an HFS+ Disk, it should be an HFS+ filesystem
(and no capitalization). There's no reason to capitalize type or creator,
either.

Ideally, the paragraph would read something like:

"Darwin refers to Apple's open source operating system, which is also the
core of MacOS X. Its closest counterpart is FreeBSD Unix. It
does not include Aqua (the new MacOS X GUI), Cocoa, or Carbon. In
addition, while it does support running on top of HFS+ filesystems, it
does not utilize dual-forked files or Macintosh type and creator
attributes."
