"Darwin refers to Apple's open source operating system, which is also the
core of MacOS X. Its closest counterpart is FreeBSD Unix. It
does not include Aqua (the new MacOS X GUI), Cocoa, or Carbon. In
addition, while it does support running on top of HFS+ filesystems, it
does not utilize dual-forked files or Macintosh type and creator
attributes."
