Take a MacOS 9 system folder, like from the CD, drag it into your disk, rename the original, and try to select the new one with System Disk. (hey, wish Mac OS X could do this ;-)

If this works your old system is screwed. Update the new system to 9.0.4 or 9.1 and put your old extensions/cdevs/prefs/etc. into it then delete the old system.

If this doesn't work your partition map may be screwed or something even worse.

Pray it does work.
