I'm sorry if this response comes across as abrasive or rude, but this
really struck me the wrong way. If an OS causes another OS to not be able
to boot, that is, contrary to what Microsoft says, a bug, and there's no
better place to discuss bugs and workarounds than a development list.

I simply have to put my foot down on this topic. Admittedly, sometimes I
drift off-topic. This is not one of those times. This thread is on-topic
for two basic reasons:

1. Darwin uses the same boot mechanism as OS X. If OS X and 9.0.4 can
get into this state, so can Darwin and 9.0.4. Therefore, it is a bug
somewhere in the low-level boot mechanisms that needs to be fixed.

2. I am a developer. I cannot do some aspects of my development until I
can boot my machine into MacOS. And I cannot do my other work until
that time as well.

This is not an advocacy discussion. This is not a Darwin installation
discussion. This is not anything that in any way is covered by any other
Apple or Apple-sponsored mailing lists. If it can't be discussed here, it
can't be discussed at all in a useful forum.

Last I checked, problems impeding development were development issues, by
definition. If not, then there needs to be another list that includes
those sorts of issues.

Please keep in mind that we outside developers don't _have_ to be here. I
don't _have_ to keep working on OS X support for older Macs. I dont'
_have_ to try to port MacOS drivers for some of my external hardware to
Mac OS X. I'm working on these things because I want to and because I
think they will help people.

However, I have a job that pays me to do completely unrelated work. I
can't do my job if I can't run Mac OS 9 on this machine. Given a choice
between doing Darwin development for free and getting paid, I will hvae to
choose getting paid. In short, if I can't solve this problem, I will be
unable to continue to do Darwin development. If that doesn't make this
topic appropriate for this venue, then there's something fundamentally
wrong.

I hope that clarifies my position on this.
