Zapped PRAM yet?

You have a FireWire bronze keyboard PowerBook, so it's a NewWorld machine. (See how cleverly I avoided code names for the machine, and then busted out with a internal name for what type of hardware it is? Sigh.)

That means that Mac OS 9 and X boot almost exactly the same way, at least until you see the happy Mac. OpenFirmware looks for a 'tbxi' file in a blessed System Folder. For Mac OS 9, that's the "Mac OS ROM" file. For X, it's the "BootX" file.

If you Zap PRAM, turn the machine off, then boot a Mac OS 9 CD, and run System Disk, select your Mac OS 9 system folder, and it boots fine... then I suspect that X is making some persistent change to NVRAM that Mac OS 9 is choking on.

If after that, it still won't boot, then I'd suspect that it's a change to disk causing the problem.

Let's start with that.
