Re: Disk Checking under MacOS X

Folks,

I'm currently subscribe to the digest version of this list, so this may have
already been mentioned on the list....

The "GPL issue" has been raised with regard to journaling filesystems, but I
know of at least one filesystem from NetBSD that might fit the bill:

lfs (Log-structured File System) - lfs is designed to allow safe
asynchronous file creation, fast file writes without intervening head seek
and near-instantaneous crash recovery. This is a more completely log
structured form of 'Journaled' filesystems such as IRIX's XFS, Reiserfs,
Microsoft's NTFS, IBM's JFS, and similar filesystems in Netware and
Unixware.

There are more details available here:

http://www.hhhh.org/perseant/lfs.html

This includes various papers on the technology and the current status of the
NetSBD implementation. Given the Berkeley/BSD origins, I would suspect that
this FS would be compatible with Apple's license requirements?
