Restart Via AE to loginwindow works?

I sure hope this isn't off topic - A look at the various lists shows
precious few other opportunities where this question would make sense.

With that caveat in mind: Documentation says you can send an Apple
Event to loginwindow with a request to effect restart, shutdown, etc.
Q: Anyone with any experience in actually doing this? My AEs have no
effect.
