task_for_pid and WindowServer

Why does task_for_pid fail (with error 5) when called on the WindowManager. This leads to the failure of gdb and vmmap, among others. On disk, WindowManager is the same as Finder, owned by root but executed by current user with no special disk based permissions. Is it granted special execution status by sbin/init, or is there something it does to disable that call?

I am a relatively new to darwin/bsd/unix, so assume I do not know the obvious.

Thanks
Eric
