Well, lookupd supports some name services that are unsupported
by Directory Services; DNS is the obvious example, and there are
some reentrancy issues involved with the fact that Directory
Services itself needs to make host lookups.

But yes, it does appear that lookupd is becoming not much more
than a thin layer on top of Directory Services. Although the
lookupd protocol might be more optimized for libc lookups than
the Directory Services protocol, there's no reason in theory
why the DirectoryServices daemon couldn't support that protocol
as well.
