I tend to see this error when I CFRelease() a CoreFoundation object too many times, but it's probably more general than that. It's discussed in a FAQ on debugging C programs that had one or two very helpful things. I don't seem to be able to get to the Apple Developer site at the moment, but you can search for "FAQ Carbon debug" and you should find it.

In this case, I believe the faq suggested setting a breakpoint on fprintf() to see exactly where the error is generated.
