problem with g77 in gcc-3.3

I was trying to build the R statistics package using gcc-3.3 from CVS.
This generally works fine, but it does not work if we set
MACOSX_DEPLOYMENT_TARGET to 10.2. In that case
the f771 driver chokes, and complains

f771: unrecognized option `-fconstant-cfstrings'

in the configure tests. Seems to me a bug in gcc-3.3 that
this option is passed to g77 at all.
