gcc3 - building and installing with ditto

The README.Apple has instructions for building and
installing gcc3. The installation says:
ditto build/dst /

Searching the archives I found:
- ditto is not open source
- used to copy resources of files while preserving the
original file information
- ditto is tied to Apples Bom file format

These leads to these questions:
If ditto is not going to be open source is there an
equivalent application that can be used within Darwin?
Is it necessary to use ditto to copy the files to
install gcc3? Can a recursive copy be used instead?
