The magic incantations needed to make a piece of hardware work are rarely
copyrightable works in and of themselves; it doesn't matter whether you read
them from an easy-to-read source file or reverse-engineer them from a
binary. In Darwin's case, they can't really be considered trade secrets
either, so pretty much the only legal risk is that the hardware access
method is patented. You'll need an Apple engineer or a patent lawyer to
figure out the probability of that, but I'd guess that it's pretty low (in
this case).
