getting around the multiple symbols problem

Occassionaly, I've run into a problem where a library I'm making has multiple symbols upon invoking ranlib.

For example, in libxview.a, a ranlib of it produces:

ranlib: same symbol defined in more than one member in: libxview.a (table of contents will not be sorted)
ranlib: file: libxview.a(tty_ntfy.o) defines symbol: _chrbase
ranlib: file: libxview.a(termsw.o) defines symbol: _chrbase

Is there something i'm not doing right at the at the archiving stage? Can the linker get around this by asking it to not worry about multiply defined symbols (ie. ld -multiply_defined suppress) ???

any help gratefully appreciated
