mount_hfs definitely does not require autodiskmount. I've had to do this
almost constantly while prototyping the floppy driver. (autodiskmount was
running fsck_hfs, which was just too much stress for the driver on
certain hardware). "mount -t hfs" might require autodiskmount, though. I
never tried it.
