GNU Autotools: Replacing the ones installed with OS X Jaguar 10.2.6/Darwin 6.6 with latest one's...

Hi there all,

A few questions relating to Mac OS X/Darwin 6.6 and Developer Tools, (Dec 2002, with the WWDC Updates applied, OS X 10.2.6).

The versions of the GNU Autotools, as you mat know, that's included with Mac OS X/Darwin 6.6, are as follows:

autoconf-2.52
automake-1.6.1
libtool-1.4.2
m4-1.4

Ok. these one's as I've noticed, are out of date slightly. The versions from the www.gnu.org site are as follows:

autoconf-2.57
automake-1.7.5
libtool-1.5
m4-1.4

The only one that hasn't changed is m4. so m4 is still up to date. OK?.

The questions I need answered are:

1) The Autotools in OS X/Darwin are they the same ones from gnu.org? or are they from somewhere different?, has Apple made some alterations to them in any way?

2) IF I where to replace them with the LATEST versions (which I already have downloaded from gnu.org), It won't affect the OS Dev tools in anyway? buggering things up for ProjectBuilder, or the BSD tools? ( from what I know I don't think so), Will it will only affect any new Open Source/UNIX stuff which I compile from now on.
3) IF I am correct in assuming this, HOW do I go about replacing the Installed ones with the new one's. Like HOW do I install them like Apple did, for e.g.: that they get installed in the same places as apple did, and replaces the old ones properly, that the only versions that are seen by the command line, and other dev tools, QT, etc are the ones that are used? There are Instructions on ADC site for replacing PERL 5.6.0, with 5.8.0 (latest) on Jaguar, but not for anything else, (like Autotools, or others)

4) Which order do I compile/Install these new versions in? so that they are properly installed/replaced?.

Lots of Open Source stuff uses the NEW tools (damn it), so Id like to fix this up if I can.

I hope Panther uses the new Versions!...

I'd appreciate your help in clearing this up guys.

...Thanx!

Nick.
