Unless you have some very good reason to change them. You should leave
them alone.

Even if you have a good reason, you should still leave them alone and
install new versions in user local.

Do NOT alter your PATH to point to them. There are options to automake
and autoconf to find macros from specific paths. Invoke autotools using a
full path and the directory options.

You can stuff your ability to build some GNU software if you play with
them and do not know what you are doing. The symptoms can be very
baffling.

PS If after that you still want to go ahead:
Libtool > 1.4.2 requires GNU sed not the BSD version on MacOS X. It may
also need gperf.
The existing autoconf/automake will work with libtool-1.5.
The current versions of these tools have a lot of changes. Using may
require substantial alteration to project. gcc uses a version of libtool
1.4. It would not build with 1.5.
