Why would sample fail?

We've have recent reports that a process of ours hangs sometimes. Our QA
folks managed to catch one and, per my instructions, tried to sample the
process to see what it was doing. Here's the report:

> When the freeze occurs, the host cannot do anything other than move
> the pointer. I ssh'ed in to the host and tried to sample the Host app, and I
> couldn't... I got 'cannot sample <process id> for unknown reasons, though it
> appears to exist' when running sample as root and as the owner of the
> process.

What state could a process be in to cause this message? Any ideas how else
might we probe the process?
