I'm not clear on what you are talking about. Open Directory is Apple's LDAP implementation, there should be no framework for it. Even if there is, you probably would still want to use the DS framework because...

DirectoryServices is the framework used to contact different directories (AD, LDAP, NIS, etc).

Not that I would want them to change but would like to know for forward compatability.
