Actually, Open Directory is the new marketing name for Apple's directory services architecture. See <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Networking/Conceptual/ Open_Directory/index.html>.

DirectoryServices is the framework used to contact different directories (AD, LDAP, NIS, etc).
