Re: PCI driver for OS 9

Hi Siraj,

Hi !

I have developed a driver for PCI-ATA card on Mac OS X 10.1.x and
higher. I need to develop the same for Mac OS 9. I have following
queries with regard to same:

1. I understand OS 9 is not open sourced. Is there a way i can find
some sample code for ATA drivers. I m looking for something like
KeylargoATA of OS X on OS 9.

2. The development tool for OS 9 is MPW, right? Is that all i need or
am i missing something. By the way whats there in Developer CD of
august 2001. How could i get the CD. The apple subscriber link has
expired.

3. What are the analogous commands in OS 9 for kextload,
kextunload, kextcache. If there's none then what is the way to load/
unload and cache the native driver (ndrv)

Mac OS 9 uses what are called 'native drivers', abbreviated 'ndrv'. These drivers are described in "Designing PCI Cards and Drivers for Power Macintosh Computers" available at:

http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/DeviceManagers/pci_srvcs/pci_cards_drivers/

As far as I know, there is no sample code specifically for ATA drivers for Mac OS 9. However there are some samples in the PCI DDK for Mac OS 9 available at:

ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Development_Kits/PCI_DDK_3.0.sit.hqx

Another thing to consider is that if you expect to be able to boot from drives attached to your card you will also need to provide an Open Firmware driver for use at boot time. There are some samples in the PCI DDK. You can find out more about Open Firmware by searching the ADC website:

http://developer.apple.com

and by going to:

Cheers,
