G4 desktop overheating My computer: Dual 870 mHz G4 "Mirror Doors" with 4 disk drives and 768 MB RAM Lately this machine has been overheating (I am given to understand that the max advisable temp is about 153 degF, and it reached 170 once before I lost my nerve and shut it down!) Everything I can find on the web talks about making it quieter by SLOWING the fan - I don't care how noisy it is, I just don't want it to melt! The fan in question (the one that blows air over the CPU's heat sink) is turning very slowly. I replaced it with no change in speed. CHUD has been suggested, but as far as I can see it just allows a "nap" state when the CPU is not busy. My CPU is always busy. What I want is to speed the fan up to its original speed - it used to blow harder, and under stress would speed up for a few minutes until it sounded like a vacuum cleaner! It doesn't do this any more at all! I suspect a recent Apple firmware upgrade, but don't know how to undo it. Any su ggestions? Thanx Dan Killoran

Incredibly, there does not seem to be an Apple list for hardware problems. I figure you guys are the most likely bunch to ask about this:
