Resolved: Kernel Panic During Installation - Network Related Error

Thank you Shantonu,

My CD-ROM was to blame. I've added it to the unsupported hardware list at the darwinunderground.com and I've also added a working drive to the list :-)

My mini-itx system is up and running, and connected to my network (using a 3com 3C905B NIC).

I greatly appreciate everyone's help and feedback. I hope to be able to return the favor in the future.

Thanks again,
Michael

I've seen panics like this on PPC when the root device was unavailable, and the default probe cycle in bsd_init.c tried to netboot. I suspect the presence on the network card/chip is not the issue.

Try swapping out the CD-ROM drive, or maybe specifiying "boot root=cdrom" at the initial boot prompt right when the install starts.

I'm not sure if your bios has it, but you can try turning off the ethernet port, if it does. I know there are a lot of systems now-a-days with built-in everything, but not as often can you turn it off though.

Hey, I've been on the list for a while, but I've just gotten around to messing with Darwin.

I'm trying to install Darwin x86 6.0.2 on a VIA mini-itx based system (I've also tried the newest ISO from OpenDarwin.org).

Here's the kernel panic:

thread_funnel_switch: network funnel not held
Debugger called: (panic)
...(8 ip/ethernet frames)...
invalid frame pointer 0
ethernet MAC address 00:00:00:00:00:00 (not edited)
ip address 0.0.0.0 (not edited either)

waiting for remote debugger connection (kinda hard to do without ethernet :-) and I'd rather not mess with serial)
kdp_poll no debugger device.

It's my intention to begin writing drivers, starting with the onboard hardware. Well, between classes anyway.

I was able to do this successfully on a friends system, but he has a compatible 3com card. The installation on his system was flawless. I will borrow his card later, but it would still be nice to prevent this from happening to someone else.

Any suggestions?

<nfs_boot: networking is not initialized> appears just before the panic. Would it be possible to edit a boot script to prevent this from running?

Thanks,
Michael Stealy
