To make this permanent, you can edit the file
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist
and change
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>debug=0x144 -v</string>
to
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>-v</string>
to always boot verbosely, or to something like
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>rd=disk0s3 -v</string>
to always boot from partition 3 of disk 0, verbosely.
