Re: Prior post CDRom/DVD mounting problem - is NOW "Solved" - many thanks

Hi Folks,
Firstly our sincere thanks to our 2 (two) persons who replyed so very quickly.

Both of you were certainly on the right track but this in particular with Apple Darwin x86 version 8.0.0 (we found)worked a treat (for us):

localhost:/root# mount_cd9660 /dev/disk2s0 /Volumes/cdrom

We physicaly created the directory /Volumes

ie.

localhost:/root# mkdir /Volumes

then we created a sub directory of /Volumes called "cdrom"

ie.

localhost:/root# mkdir /Volumes/cdrom

THEN we finally were able to mount the device with the following (without the quote marks )typed in at the flashing command prompt, for example:

localhost:/root# "mount_cd9660 /dev/disk2s0 /Volumes/cdrom"

Remember to put the underscore character between the mount and cd9660

ie. mount_cd9660

Remember our CDRom/DVD LG "Super Multi" Combo Drive is the "SLAVE" on our FIRST ON MOTHERBOARD CONTROLLER STRAP.

Depending on how many IDE ATA COMPLIANT devices you have the "disk2s0" in your case may change to disk1s0 - disk3s0 - disk4s0 etc. POSSIBLY !!!

Our greatful thanks to "Ethan" from our Forum for getting "our and my" gray matter thinking. Otherwise we may still have been struggleing NEXT CHRISTMAS to access our device.

The interesting thing about Darwin and ATA IDE / ATAPI setups is that it "SEES" the HDD's FIRST and the CDROM/DVD last regardless of if the CDROM / DVD is a Primary or Slave on the first or Second Controller by the looks of our setup.

It may be different on your x86 PC

Something which our good Cobber Ethan (a AD forum user)suggested was:
Do an ls /dev/disk* this gives you a listing of drives attached that Darwin has come to grips with and recognised.

As the CDRom disk we alread had in our drive caddy was fixated and non multisession ready to rock and roll as soon as we got drive recognition post install of darwin v8.0 "disk2s0" seemed to be the logical choice as far as th "0" or slice as we wanted to see the whole of the cddisk in the drive and it wasn't partitioned in any way... anyway.

For any n00bs - newbies - first timers, your / filesystem may well be mounted in "read only mode" after install and or reboot. So see the lines above your flashing prompt as your example you should have something like 2 seperate short lines of text the second should be somehing like

/dev/mount xx /

The xx are two letters one is a "w" the other possibly a "u"

BUT.......
Type the above line (exactly as "you see it" on your Display Monitor) in at your flashing prompt ..... then press the enter key on your keyboard.

This will allow you to have read and write access to your filesystem(s) on your hdd straight after booting.

We are now able to access our all important CDRom/DVD Combo drive.... at least in read mode.

Unfortunately we still might be outside of the BSD / FreeBSD / Darwin guidelines on security and or etticate on clean file and directory tree structures. Seems to be i remember dimly way back when, they told us in the linux world "NOT" to install anything in or under some "/x" directory / folder ...... perhaps it was /root ... i just really can't remember. Too many sleeps and too much water under the bridge since then.

I guess folks it comes down to what I and we under our roof call good file and folder housekeeping.

Thank you all once again and thanks to Mr. and Mrs Apple and the Apple Darwin Groups and Forum. "Do greater things for us all."

OK ... folks that a rap,

                                              Kind Regards to all
                                              kelly and group.
