A while ago I wrote a quick program to do just that:
http://www.darwinfo.org/pub/darwin/utils/pwrmgt-1.1.tar.gz

Power management from the command line.
Beware, there are zero permissions on power management.
Anyone can use this tool and put any Darwin/OS X machine to sleep.
