Re: [newbie] Darwin on Apple Network Servers?

Hi,
I've been using MacOS X for some months now, but have still not installed
Darwin on anything yet. One (well 2 in fact) likely looking candidates
are my Apple Network Servers (the 604e based UNIX (AIX) servers with
internal RAID, dual power supplies etc.).

Does anyone know if a Darwin kernel exists for these beasts...

Just give them a try.

In principle, Darwin (like OS X) works fine on 604 and even 603 processors. The only problem are the needed kernel extensions and a method to get the booter (BootX) to run.

I'd suggest to install OS 9 as well as OS X on two partitions, add Ryan Rempels oldWorld support (http://homepage.mac.com/RyanRempel/) and then to boot OS X, holding down cmd-v to see all the text messages. OS X is better than Darwin, since Darwin is currently some part missing (BootX, written into the partition table) which is needed by oldWorld machines.

To install OS X, you might have a chicken-and-egg problem unless you have another box where you can put the drive temporarily. But read Ryans comments for this, too.

You might also want to try an older Darwin version, first, since they had better oldWorld support and a complete other booting mechanism. Do you know wether OS X Server 1.x works on your box?

You see, it might just work or need some fiddling. If you're stuck, tell me how far your boot goes.

Hope that helps a little,
Markus
