Re: Newbie Question? Is there a root in Mac OSX (Darwin)?

I am the one that brought up the *
... I was talking about how unix disables an account ... change the password of the account to a phrase that starts with an asterick (*) ... not that it is really really really dumb to have any password with less than six (6) characters ... and any root pasword should be treated more seriously ... that just to suggest the emphasis on not having set your password to an asterick (*) but to an asterick in front of another phrase like so:

I was surprised that Tony never got a real answer to this. The
Administrator account givin at the time of installation is *NOT* the root
account and does not have all the privileges of the root accout. But, yes
Tony, there *is* a root account...

To enable the root account:

1) Run the NetInfo Manager in the Utilities folder.
2) Choose Domain > Security > Authenticate. Enter the Administrator
account password.
3) Choose Domain > Security > Enable Root User.
4) Enter a new password for the Root account. Make it a good one! This is
a dangerous account for the kids to get into!

It seemed to me it was answered... and the conclusion was more simple.

sudo passwd root

The only thing I was unclear on was disabling root in a similar fashion.

I thought someone suggested setting root's password to '*', but that
didn't seem to work for me... passwd wants minimum of 5 chars.
