Most shell scripts *assume* that everything in the filesystem uses only
printable characters excluding whitespace characters (e.g. space & tabs).
You can manually fix the configure script to watch out for whitespace.
You can also badger the current maintainers to do this, but my guess is
that they will not see it as an important issue that needs to be fixed.
