This is exactly what most people try to avoid as big streaming devices are rarely affordable and copying a 30GB drive to CD-R takes several days.

Back in the Windows 3.1 days I remember some tool named "Partition Magic". This did the job of resizing partitions without backing up anything. It even ran standalone without any Volume mounted.

Somebody knows a similar tool for Mac-based UNICes?
