Play audio files from command line?

A quick question.

Say I have an AIFF file with 16-bit samples. Is there a way to send this to the speaker of my PowerBook G4 from the command line? I'm sure it's not as simple as cat > /dev/audio. Indeed /dev/audio doesn't appear to exist in Darwin despite having a man page.

What I'm probably looking for is a user-level interface to the Audio Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL). Does such a thing exist, or could such a thing be contrived with a script? Is there some little utility I can download from somewhere?

Though I'm actually running MacOS X rather than bare Darwin, I'm specifically seeking a way to avoid having to load Quicktime or iTunes whenever I just want to audition a sound file. Perhaps there's some obvious thing I'm just missing.

Thanks,
Tony M.
