What I'm probably looking for is a user-level interface to the Audio Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL). Does such a thing exist, or could such a thing be contrived with a script? Is there some little utility I can download from somewhere?

The audio HAL is not in Darwin.

Though I'm actually running MacOS X rather than bare Darwin, I'm specifically seeking a way to avoid having to load Quicktime or iTunes whenever I just want to audition a sound file. Perhaps there's some obvious thing I'm just missing.

On OS X, you can use ports of Linux things like esound to CoreAudio. These types of questions are more at home on OS X lists, like for example email@hidden.
