I can't get root privileges on this box (don't know the root password -
can't su to root - and never will be, according to the TechSupportGuy I

How, for example, would I upgrade and install (without root access) a new
version of perl? (5.6.0 is installed).

You would have to install it in your home directory. If you can find precompiled binaries, you would have to copy them to the appropriate sub-directories (I don't know what those are!). Otherwise, you can compile from source. When you run "Configure", you can specify the installation directory. In this case, you'll probably want to do:

# sh Configure -Dprefix=/home/buttmunch/

or whatever your home directory is named. ;-)

Hope this helps. I attempted to compile 5.6.1 myself before it was updated by Apple, but I was not able to do it correctly. i.e. don't ask *me* for help compiling it :)
