Re: dumb ibook question

OK is this Mac OS X you are running or Darwin? Is this system administered by someone else or is it yours?

If Mac OS X and this is your laptop (you admin it) then...

The root account (username: root) is disabled by default. The first user created, unless changed using the User System Preferences panel, has the ability to "Admin" the system.

If the user you login is this first user or a user that has been granted Admin privileges then you can use sudo at the command line to gain increased privileges. This should let you do what you need to do in most cases. Also you can use your login password to authenticate with applications that need it (usually via a lock icon in a round button).

Default installs of Mac OS X do not contain a compiler. You can get developer tools by visiting Apple developer website (if you don't already have the developer CD). This is a large download but it will give you gcc and all of Apple developer tools. Visit: http://developer.apple.com/tools/macosxtools.html for more information.

Visit stepwise (http://www.stepwise.com/) for tips on how to build and update things on Mac OS X (not sure if they have an article on perl).

I can't get root privileges on this box (don't know the root password -
can't su to root - and never will be, according to the TechSupportGuy I
spoke with).

If you have the Mac OS X install CD, you can boot off of the CD.
Then somewhere on there (don't have mine here with me) there is an option
to reset the root password.

I've heard this several times on some mailing lists, but I've never
actually tried it myself.
