dumb ibook question

I hope this is the only copy you receive of this note - I sent it from the
wrong (unsubscribed) address before

Hello,

Please excuse the intrusion. I just got a 14" ibook and am looking around
for "stuff".

Here are some ibook-rookie questions:

Where is cc/gcc? (or where can I get such things?)

I can't get root privileges on this box (don't know the root password -
can't su to root - and never will be, according to the TechSupportGuy I
spoke with).

How, for example, would I upgrade and install (without root access) a new
version of perl? (5.6.0 is installed).

I know that the usual answer to such questions is RTFM - so the real
question is "where is the FM" 8^)

I'm confortable using unix in other environments (linux), but can't seem to
figure out how things work here. Is there an information source for unix
users who haven't figured out OSX.

I like this box and would like to use the underlying unix OS from the
commandline.

Thanks,

Warren (looking forward to understanding unix on the ibook) Pollans
