A French Student in need of your Knowledge...

Hello !
I think you are bright enough to Save My Soul;
I'm a French student in Southern France, in University of Montpellier, in IUP GMI (Institut Universitaire Professionnalisi Ginie Mathimatiques et Informatique), ie University Vocational Institue in Computer Science and Mathematics.
At school, we usually use Linux to learn Computing : programming C++, Perl, etc. Yet, at home, I'm working with Apple hardware for years...
in order to ease my way learning Computing I bought in september 2001 THE OS : Mac OS X, because of its Unix Core.
I whished you'd have known where I could find lessons to masterize the unix side of this OS.
I've got to code a chess game in C++, using Qt before May 30th, 2002!
I'd like to know how ? In fact, I downloaded and expanded the source from ftp.troll.no, then while using the "Terminal", I had to log in root, and to change files .profile or .login, which didn't exist before compiling : I thought that I may created a file named .tcshrc , inside which I could set new variables for Qt... No way : "Internal Error." is returned to me.
Pleaase, how can I solve this problem ?
Or what can I do to use Qt toolkit with my computer - a 2001-iMac DV SE?
