Here's the deal: Apple spent a ton of time getting the SystemConfiguration framework written, which dynamically and centrally handles all network interface properties/settings. But they didn't provide a good utility for modifying/
adding configurations to the database,
so this wonderful piece of software is sitting there useless on most people'
s Darwin boxes.
One thing you could try: install OS X first, configure the network settings via the Network control panel, and then save a copy of /var/db/SystemConfiguration/
preferences.xml on another computer/disk. Then install Darwin, after it'
s installed, etc, copy the saved preferences back into /var/db/SystemConfiguration/
preferences.xml, reboot, and go with it. That should work...that's how I configured my Wallstreet PowerBook.
The only other thing I can tell you is that I'm (personally) steadily working on a utility to mirror the Network control panel of OS X in Darwin.
The utility (NetworkConfig) will allow you to easily add network interface configurations and networking locations (to use the OS X terms) to the SystemConfiguration system. I keep finding little things I forgot or could add to make it a smoother, more friendly piece of code; nevertheless, it should be complete soon.
