Re: 'top' command results

The load average is the number of processes which are ready to run and still on the run queue, e.g. they're not sleeping on anything but not currently running either. Since it's a running average, if you go from zero processes waiting to 3 processes waiting, the load average will slowly climb to 3 and then stabilize.

OK - I have searched high and low on the net - read every book I can get my
hands on - but cannot find the answer to this question -

When you run the top command in the CLI - What are the Load avg and CPU
usage telling me .......

Example from my machine -

Load Avg: 0.32, 0.20, 0.13 CPU usage: 1.8% user, 8.1% sys, 90.1% idle

The information I have found so far relates to the 'uptime' command and says
that Load Avg is CPU usage on 1,5 and 10 minute intervals. So you would read
the above as 32% usage 1 min ago - 20% usage 5 min ago and 13% usage 10 min
ago.

This does not work for top as all three load avg number change (about every
2 sec) and does not seem to match up with the CPU usage %?????

Can anyone help me solve the problem or point me in the direction of some
info.

Thanks
