Incidentally, I tried running startx then sleeping and killing X, and

it says screen :0 added, then discarding screen :1, then it says
invalid hieght and width

Maybe the problem is related to me having an ATI Radeon 8500. I had an
ATI driver installed under OS X Jaguar, and X11 has worked on Jaguar
and continues to work under Panther. I wonder if I need to get an ati
driver installed into opendarwin somehow in order for X to work.

Here is the output I had which was very similar, except that I got a black screen covering everything except the cursor and that it happened only if I had an OpenFirmware screen during boot (including with the <alt> key)

Operating System: Darwin Apple Computer, Inc.
Using keymapping provided in /System/Library/Keyboards/USA.keymapping.
Display mode: IOKit
Screen 0 added: 1440x900 @ (0,0)
Discarding screen 1:
Invalid width or height.

The problem is that the monitor resolution it finds is not among the
defaults it accepts at first. Try setting it to 1024*768 and see if you can
get the server to boot that way. That done, see if you can get the program
xf86cfg to run - I don't remember if it's installed by default or if you
have to find it somewhere. If you can get the program to run, you can use it
to add other accepted resolutions (modelines).

Thanks. I tried:

startx -- -size 640 480
startx -- -refresh 60 -size 640 480
startx -- -refresh 75 -size 1024 768

and they all give results similar to:

Attempting to use refresh rate of 75
Attempting to use width x height = 1024 x 768

XFree86 Version 4.4.0 / X Window System

newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
	reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)

Display mode: IOKit
Discarding screen 0:
Desired screen resolution or refresh rate is not supported.
Discarding screen 0:
Desired screen resolution or refresh rate is not supported.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
   OsVendorFatalError
   AbortDDX
Quitting XDarwin...
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

this is different than without the size and refresh rates specified though. In thouse cases it says it's discarding screen 1: and the server doesn't die.

Regarding xf86cfg, I read:

"From the console, the Darwin port of XFree86 uses the IOKit for device driver loading and discovery, rather than the XFree86 module loader. Because of this, the XFree86 configuration file is not used on Darwin or Mac OS X systems."

In the Darwin specific notes that come with XFree86 4.4.0.

Can I still use xf86cfg?

I wonder if copying /System/Library/Extensions/ATI* from MacOS X into opendarwin's filesystem would allow opendarwin to use ati's drivers.
