Yes, XDarwin is the only X server that supports running from the text
console. The problem you are describing when you quit XDarwin is a
known issue. XDarwin releases the display, but the text console does
not begin drawing to it again. However, the text console is receiving
your keystrokes, so you can type "exit" or "logout" to get back to a
login prompt.
