First you have to write some commands to start the GUI, if you wish to use KDE you must write -#startkde
if you wish to use gnome use should write
#gnome-session
but I think to start X, you will first write xinit and then a console will appear on the top of X11, then you should write startkde or gnome-session, actually all I know about those window managers is that and some more,
as an addition, .xinitrc file in your profile folder is responsible for that xinit command namely it holds the information to initialize the X session. that is all I can tell you, good luck...
