Getting selected text from text area

Hi All,
I know this question is more about WebKit than Dashboard specifically, but since it is Dashboard I am developing for I thought I'd try here. I'm trying to find a way of getting javascript to edit a textarea according to the text that a user has selected in that area. If the users select a word or two and then press a button elsewhere on the widget it should add a basic HTML tag before and after that selection. I've searched around on Google now but the methods I find seem geared towards IE and don't deal with other platforms/engines very well.

Does anyone know how to do this or where I can go looking for more help?
