Widget with WebKit plugin?

I'm trying to write a plug-in that displays a bit of custom content in an OpenGL view. The simplest way to do this seems to be to write a WebKit plugin and embed that in the HTML. To test this I've compiled the WebKitMoviePlugin project included with the dev tools and included that in the BlankWidget example.

So far the plug-in loads in Safari, but in Dashboard my widget just disappears. My console log shows this message: "failed to create startup object"

I'm a bit confused on how to use a custom plugin like this, or if it's even supported. The WebKit plugin docs says that an application can use a plugin that's not installed into /Library/Internet Plug-Ins by placing it in AppName/Contents/Plug-Ins. Well since widgets don't have a Contents folder I'm not sure where to put it. I've tried in the root widget folder as well as Contents/Plug-Ins.

I can't tell why it's working in Safari, but I think it's because the Plug-In registered itself when I first ran the WebKitMoviePlugIn example.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
  Justin
