After detailing and re-creating some of Apple's plastic looked
widgets, I finally found that using plain white gradients is close
enough to me. A HSV approach would be more accurate but well, we like
to spend more time on a clean code.
To obtain a quick plastic look there are two gradients :
- The highlight goes from top to the middle of the element (62%
transparency).
- And a glow, that is almost invisible but will add to the final
effect, that start from the middle and end up something like 1/4 from
the element's end (11% transparency).
This effects will not work well on too big panels but is perfect for
a stick or parts of your widget (see Apple's Stocks).
We're planning to post a review on the plastic look someday on
ladybug.fr or flapsdesign.com
Sorry but most parts of this sites are actually in French, we hope to
offer an English version soon.
