I've been working on a widget for automatically rating iTunes songs.
Basically, I have a largish (7000+ tracks) iTunes library, of which
none are rated. The widget I've written checks when you're using
iTunes, and then uses some criteria and a few random numbers to build
up a rating for each song.
It's working pretty well, rating songs as I listen, and should over
time and with some manual prodding give a fairly accurate picture of
what I like to listen to.
What I need is a few more testers, who wouldn't be too angry at
having their iTunes song ratings being mucked about with.
The widget works thus:
- when a song is listened to, it gets (0-5) added to it's rating.
iTunes ratings are actually out of 100, with a star every 20 points.
- each song then has a 1-in-(rating / 2) chance of being docked a
further (0-5) points, to keep songs moving slightly in the ratings -
bad rated songs should stay worse than well-rated songs, but every
song won't naturally rise to 100.
- new songs that have never been rated (ie: 0/100) have their
initial score multiplied by 15 to give them a head start towards
their first few stars.
If anyone is interested in testing, let me know and I'll put a
version up on the web. Please note the GUI is still a little rough
around the edges, as is the JS - both could do with a bit of polish.
