Re: not a valid widget

Hmm... my guess is it has something to do with the case-sensitive Journaled HFS+ system. I am just running regular journaled HFS+, but I get the same error -- " The file whatever.widget is not a valid widget and you cannot install it." -- when I remove the Info.plist file from the bundle.

So my guess to the problem is Dashboard is looking for "info.plist", or something, while most every widget is "Info.plist".

But... I'm not sure exactly why older widgets work, while the downloaded ones do not -- I'd think it's one of two reasons.
1. There was a clause in the Apple install that changes the name to "info.plist" or something
2. It's a problem with the finder launching the widget into the 'safe' mode in dashboard or whatever it's called (where it has the keep/delete window).

You can try asking her, if the regular apple-provided widgets work, to explore their bundles in /Library/Widgets to see if the info file is named Info.plist or info.plist. If it's Info.plist, you can tell her to try manually dropping your widget in the ~/Library/Widgets folder, without modifying anything in the bundle, and see if it shows up in the Dashboard widgets pane.. hopefully it should.

I just got two bits of information from this user:
1. "I'm using the Case-sensitive Journaled HFS+ file system. I've assumed that's a completely immaterial factor for most applications, though it is the only change I've made to my system. I am confident that the remainder of my system is standard."
2. "all the widgets [from apple.com] refuse to load, claiming the widget is invalid when I try to run it from Finder. I'm happy it's a consistent situation but a bit confused about why older widgets work but new one's do not."

Does anyone have any suggestions? (I've already asked her to confirmed that Dock is specified in the "Open with:" section of the Get Info box.)

Ben, I tried your suggestion. She emailed me the widget and it ran fine on my machine.

Hi Chuck,

Have you had her email you the widget? Perhaps for some reason her machine is corrupting the download, which you might be able to see by peeking inside the widget bundle.

Hello,

I have a user that is getting the following message: "The file 'VelaClock.wdgt' is not a valid widget and you cannot install it" when double clicking on the unzipped widget. Older versions of VelaClock work fine.

She says:
- the behavior is consistent across all machines (PowerMac G5, Titanium Powerbook and 1.67 Mhz Aluminum Powerbook).
- has Mac OS X 10.4.7 and uses uses Safari for downloading (on all machines).
- confirmed that the Dock was specified in the "Open with:" section of the Get Info box.
- is able to successfully download and install other widgets from apple.com.

I can't reproduce the behavior and no other users have reported a similar issue. She's re-downloaded the widget a number of times and I even emailed her a zipped copy.

Does anyone know what I should suggest? Any ideas?

Thanks,
Chuck
