A while back I wanted a laugh, so I looked at some widgets that
charge money to see how easy they were to break. Some have code that
is like:
function checkForLicense()
{
//if you remove this code, you suck
bleh bleh bleh
}
I guess that would detract some people, but probably not the people
who wouldn't have paid money in the first place. You may also be
able to write a Cocoa plugin to check for a license value, since I
think those are compiled, and the user will not be able to see or
edit them.
In general though... this is my personal opinion... most widgets are
not worth actually charging money to use. Some are really useful,
sure, but if you compare the amount you can do with a widget vs. the
power of most $30 Cocoa applications, I think it's hard to justify
saying that the widget is 1/5 or 1/10 as good.
On the other hand, a bunch of widget developers have thrown up donate
buttons on their website. You probably won't make as much if you did
that, but there are a bunch of people who will go out of their way
and donate money, which is pretty awesome. But that way, you
wouldn't have to worry about people hacking the licensing and all the
headaches that come from that, and your widget will likely get a
bunch more users, you'll get more feedback, and in the end the widget
will be a lot better. At least, that's been my experience.

Probably not but you might come up with a way to encrypt the
Javascript code within your Widget or have the Widget phone home to
see if this is a valid user/license.

I have some ideas that would make cool little widgets that I think
people
would pay a few bucks for. But this is not a questions asking:
should I
sell...
The real question is this - is there a way to copy protect a widget?
Thanks
