Dashboard Developers,
Since the release of Mac OS X Tiger, developers have delivered thousands of
great Dashboard widgets to users around the world. Apple is constantly
working to improve the Dashboard experience for both users and
developers. Apple and the Open Source community continue to advance
standards compliance in the WebKit engine behind Dashboard to
improve compatibility with the web and decrease development time for content
providers, resulting in a better experience for you and your customers.
Through the Web Kit open source project, you have a rare opportunity to test
your widget's compatibility with Web Kit before it ships to your
customers. We're very interested in seeing you try your widget content with
a nightly build of Safari from http://nightly.webkit.org to make sure our
emphasis on standards compliance is a success.
An ADC article on working with nightly Web Kit builds is at the following
URL:
http://developer.apple.com/opensource/internet/nightlywebkit.html
This describes how to get started with nightly builds and also details
changes to the canvas object -- a big part of widget development -- as a
result of its ongoing standardization process. Many other changes are
underway as well. This is a great opportunity to not only prepare for the
future but also shape it by giving us feedback in the form of bug reports
before we release a product.
Please feel free to contact me with any concerns or feedback about these new
developments. I hope you will take the time to work with us in making
Dashboard as good as it possibly can be in both the near- and short-term
future.
