This isn't directly development related, but I thought I'd take a
shot at tapping the wisdom of the group on the subject of
publicizing widget releases.
I'm fast approaching the release of PHP Function Reference 1.0 (the
widget has been stuck at 0.9.6.2b for over a year). I'd like this
release to be spread far and wide as it will be the first that is
really "ready for prime time."
What strategies have you used to publicize your widgets and with
what success? Of course, you will have posted to Apple.com,
VersionTracker.com, etc. Which sites have given you the best return
on investment (investment of time, that is)?
On the Macsb list, a lot of people seem to recommend prMac, which I
believe charges you a small fee (like 15-50$) to send press releases
around to a bunch of sites. I haven't used it yet, and while I think
they primarily do apps, I'm sure they'd do widgets too.
In my experience, the best return on investment is easily apple.com,
which is probably around 70-80% of my referrals. But I also update my
widget on MacUpdate, VersionTracker, iUseThis, and
dashboardwidgets.com. Sometimes other download sites (especially
international ones) pick up the listings on those sites.
It also helps hugely if you're lucky enough to get listed in the staff
favorite section on the Apple Dashboard downloads page, or if you make
it on to the Top 50 downloads list.
I've also found that monday/tuesday are the best days to release
stuff. If you release on Friday, developers that release over the
weekend normally bury your apps listing by the time people get back
from the weekend.
I also think that people are more inclined to download a 1.x than a
0.x... and from what I've heard (especially with sales), people like
2.x versions even more (perhaps why some developers jump the gun to
2.x after like 1 minor release in version 1).
