CD-R recognition problem on some iMacs

I am not sure if this is the proper mailing list for my question. If
not, please redirect me to the proper location.

My company has created a software product that runs on both Mac and PC.
This software is distributed via a hybrid CD-R that is created using
Toast. We have been having problems getting the discs that our software
is on to be recognized by some iMac computers. For example, in a room
full of 25 identical iMac computers, a disc might be recognized all of
the time that we insert the disc on 15 computers, some of the times that
we insert the disc on 5 computers, and never on 5 computers. When I say
"recognized", I mean that a CD icon appears on the desktop. When I say
"not recognized", I mean that a window pops up saying "This disk is
unreadable by this Computer. Do you want to initialize the disk?"

Thus far, we have tried a variety of burners (Plextor, Lacie, and Sony)
and CD-R brands (Mitsui, TDK, Sony) and we have not yet been able to
consistently produce a CD that is readable on all iMacs. We are burning
at 4x and have verified with a professional CD production lab that our
burning procedure is correct.

The production lab mentioned that the CD drives in the first iMacs have
had problems with CD-R and suggested that we try CD-ROM instead of CD-R.
Is this our only option? Can anyone suggest a burner/CD-R media
combination that has produced CDs that have been successfully recognized
on many different iMacs?

Note that for now, we are only trying to get the mastered CD to be
recognized. Once we do that, we'll move on to CD duplication.
